WASHINGTON – The Space and Missile Systems Center has completed three virtual tests of a new anti-interference feature for satellite communications in the closing months of 2020, the center announced Feb. 17.

The program for reducing and preventing crashes will provide advanced anti-jamming support for Wideband Global SATCOM, which satellite communications with US war fighters around the world. Once operational, the capability allows the WGS constellation to locate and mitigate attempts to block the signal.

"The MAJE system will double anti-jam capabilities for more than 16,000 users," Major Shawna Matthys, WGS-11 + program manager said in a statement.

The system provides software and hardware upgrades to the Army's Global SATCOM Configuration Control Element, the ground system used to detect, identify, locate and reduce interference with WGS satellites.

The three tests – conducted virtually for 18 days with support from prime contractor Boeing – "verified MAJE's system design and ability to provide telemetry and successfully locate signals interfering with WGS satellites," said SMC.

The three tests performed were the maintenance engineering evaluation, the payload application software formal qualification test, and the first item test (FAT) increment 4. The last in that list is the test that demonstrated the system's ability to geolocate signals that WGS to disturb. A fifth and final step will complete multi-capability and end-to-end testing, paving the way for the system to begin interface verification with military subsystems.

“The teamwork and transparency between Boeing and the combined government teams to have these capabilities verified in a virtual environment has been truly impressive. It shows how committed we are to bringing these capabilities to the war fighter despite an ongoing pandemic, ”WGS chief engineer Steve Hayden said in a statement.

SMC expects to complete the transition from the anti-jamming system to the military for operational use by the spring of 2022.
